Hey guys, Bradley Johnson here with this week’s Friday from the field. Most of us who are gun guys have sat around a campfire and participated in gun debates. One debate that fascinates me is what PH’s use as a follow up gun on leopard. I find they are in one of two camps, shotgun or rifle. This is a newsletter not a book so I do not have enough room to fit a ton of opinions on the matter but this is what our buddy Morgan Potter with Robin Hurt Safaris has to say on the matter. As with most professionals, they feel very strongly in the opinion of kit they carry. Moving forward, we would love hearing from all of our other partners on what gun they choose to carry for follow up on dangerous game and why?
“Most of us at RHS favor using our heavy rifle over a shotgun when following wounded leopard. Robin himself was mauled by a leopard a good while back and feels sure that he would have sorted it out had he been carrying his double.
Another friend in the business skinned a leopard that had mauled another PH and told me that the bulk of the buckshot was just under the skin. The other advantage of using a rifle of course, is that if you are lucky enough to spot the cat from a fair distance, you can shoot him accurately and effectively from there, which wouldn’t be the case with buckshot or even a slug. When the cat is almost on you, the advantage of having a shot pattern is pretty well negated too! I write this after a long and fruitless sit in a leopard blind. With a bit of luck, we will get the cat and I won’t have to further test my theory on the double vs shotgun on leopard!”
I hope you fellow gun nerds find this information as fascinating as I do. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Don’t forget the tonic water, bring plenty of gin, and act appropriately.
